What Is a DEXA Scan and How Does It Measure Body Composition?
Two people can weigh the same and have completely different bodies. Here is how a DEXA scan tells them apart, in about seven minutes.
Most health plans start with a guess. A calorie number from an app. A workout from a friend. A supplement someone swears by. Sometimes it works. Often it stalls, and nobody can tell you why, because nobody measured where you started.
At Prefusion Health we start the other way round. We measure first, then build the plan, then measure again to prove it worked. Here is what advanced health testing actually looks at, and why it changes the decisions you make.
A standard checkup tells you your weight, your blood pressure and a few routine blood markers. Useful, but it misses most of what decides how you look, feel and age. Advanced testing fills those gaps with four measurements:
Two people can weigh exactly the same and have completely different bodies. One carries more muscle; the other carries more fat, some of it around the organs. A DEXA scan shows which one you are, so you know whether a plan is costing you fat or muscle.
An online calorie calculator uses your height, weight and age. Your real metabolism can run well above or below that estimate. An RMR test gives you the actual number, so your calorie and protein targets are set for your body, not an average one.
A scan can show that fat is collecting around your midsection. It cannot show why. Labs can: insulin, hormones, thyroid and inflammation each push the body to store fat in different ways. Knowing the cause is the difference between a plan that works and one that fights your biology.
How you feel day to day is real, but it is not data. Retesting after about 90 days shows the change in actual numbers: fat down, muscle held or built, fitness up. That is how you know the plan is working, and what to adjust if it is not.
Testing is only useful if someone turns it into a plan. At Prefusion, your results are read to you in person, never just emailed. With the Prefusion Protocol, your DEXA, RMR and comprehensive labs are reviewed by our medical team and health coach, who build a written plan covering:
Then we retest, so you see the change in real numbers instead of hoping for it.
You do not have to do everything at once. A single DEXA scan ($179) gives you a clear baseline. The Prefusion Protocol ($549, or $649 with VO2 max) gives you the full picture, including labs and a written plan from our medical team. If you are considering a therapy, Therapy Entry ($199) brings a provider consult, a DEXA scan and a full blood panel together in one visit.

No. A physical covers general health. Advanced testing measures body composition, metabolism, fitness and detailed lab markers to explain why your body is doing what it is doing.
Not always. Many people start with a DEXA scan. The Prefusion Protocol is for anyone who wants the full picture and a plan built by our medical team.
Most members retest about every 90 days while working on a goal, then every 3 to 6 months to stay on track.
